The Wedding Toast: 8 Tips To Help You Get You Started!

Speeches are always nerve-wracking whether you’re the bride, the groom, or part of the entourage… anyone would want a heartfelt, entertaining, and memorable wedding toast. It seems challenging but it can happen! Here are a few tips to help you get through it.

1.) Don’t Humiliate the Couple

This is the core rule when coming up with a wedding toast. For the newlyweds as well, don’t humiliate each other! Avoid embarrassment at all costs. This a special and once-in-a-lifetime occasion, imagine if you were in their shoes! It’ll also make you look pretty awful to everyone, actually.

2.) Avoid Drinking Until After Your Speech

I was my sister’s Maid of Honour and before the big day, she’d constantly remind me to avoid drinking until after I’ve said my speech. My dear sister even had the waiters informed not to give me a drink! It was funny but she was dead serious and I understood her. To be even a tad bit tipsy during your wedding toast won’t do you any good, you’ll be in front of all age groups-- so you have to keep it for General Audiences! (It would’ve also been extremely embarrassing as all our relatives were there, so you get the picture).

3.) Make it Brief

Majority of guests get bored easily if speeches drag on for too long which is why I kept mine brief, written back to back on the hotel’s 4x6 stationery, to be exact. You don’t have to make it exactly that short but you’ll know when it gets too long. Also avoid using bundled up paper, you wouldn’t want the guests to eye them and think, “Oh my goodness, he’s only on page 1!”

4.) No Jokes About Marriage

It’s a bit cringey when someone jokes about marriage during a wedding toast. I know it might probably be an attempt to keep it light but this is the first day of the couple’s marriage… any negativity should be avoided.

5.) This Isn’t About You

There are some who digress during their speech and start talking about themselves… I know, how could anyone do that, right? Well, it happens. You never know what nervousness can do to someone so it’s best to have your speech in writing and practice which leads us to the next point…

6.) Have A Script and Stick To It

It’s definitely a good idea to have a script and stick to it. Practice, practice, practice, even if it’s just the night before (I did, and my speech turned out fantastic!). As long as you prepare and stick to your script, you’ll be okay!

7.) Nothing About Sex

Need I remind you that a wedding will be filled with both sides’ families, not just friends? Grandparents, parents, and children? So try to avoid even implying about sex even if you want to mention anything about honeymoon plans-- don’t.

8.) And Definitely Nothing About The Ex

They’re married now-- it’s all about looking forward!

Don’t mention any ex, please.
